About the Yellowstone Trail
The Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental automobile highway route in the United States. Spanning from Massachusetts to Washington, the route was devised in 1912 to create a safe and efficient route of travel across the country in the advent of the automobile. At the time, roads were plagued with mud and potholes, maps were inaccurate and highways weren’t even named or numbered. The minds behind the Yellowstone Trail lobbied governments, from federal to municipal, to create good roads that would allow for a planned route for transcontinental travel. It’s called the Yellowstone Trail because, of course, it goes through Yellowstone National Park.
